Help with funding a Claybed
We know a Claybed is a significant purchase, and many families use funding support to help make it possible. Below is a guide to the main funding pathways available to families in New Zealand. Every situation is different, so we always recommend confirming eligibility directly with the relevant agency.
Funding a Claybed in New Zealand
Here's exactly how the funding process works, step by step, from your first assessment through to your Claybed being installed.
How the funding process works
- Contact your local NASC (Needs Assessment and Service Coordination). This is your starting point: Accessable for Auckland and Northland, or Enable New Zealand for the rest of the country. They'll carry out a needs assessment, which can be done virtually or in person.
- If eligible, you'll be referred to an Equipment and Modification Services (EMS) assessor. The EMS assessor works out what equipment suits your family best, including whether a Claybed is a good fit.
- Funding support is confirmed through Disability Support Services. Once your need has been approved, support funding is arranged through the same NASC agency (Accessable or Enable New Zealand) that carried out your assessment.
- Your Claybed is purchased, installed, and ready for your family to use.
Because every family's situation is different, we'd always recommend confirming the exact steps with your assessor, but this gives you a clear picture of what to expect.
Equipment and Modification Services (EMS)
If your child has a health need or disability that has lasted, or is expected to last, more than six months, you may be able to access funded equipment through Disability Support Services. This is coordinated through a Needs Assessment and Service Coordination (NASC) agency: Accessable for Auckland and Northland, or Enable New Zealand for the rest of the country. A needs assessor will look at your child's situation and, if eligible, refer you to an Equipment and Modification Services (EMS) assessor to work out what equipment suits your family best.
Additional Funding Sources
If your child's needs relate to an injury or accident, ACC may be able to help fund equipment as part of a rehabilitation plan. This process usually starts with a conversation with your GP.
Charitable trusts, such as the Wilson Home Trust Equipment and Activity Grant, can sometimes help with funding gaps for equipment that supports a child's mobility, participation, or wellbeing. A NASC or EMS assessor can usually point you toward options relevant to your family.
